How to help
Thank you for showing interest in preserving this historic and beautiful spot on the St. Joseph River! Prior to our forming a formal group of Friends of the Cemetery, which is on the roadmap in the immediate future, you can help in one of these ways:
Visit the cemetery! One way of keeping vandals at bay (at least some of them) is to demonstrate that this location is important and that is shown by paying it a visit. If we keep the path worn down with our visits, it will let some of the more degenerate parts of society know that this is not simply a place to do whatever destructive thing they want. Visit and simply take in the beauty of this quiet location. Come often and take a little break during the day. Together, we can keep a watchful eye on this local treasure and help preserve it for future generations.
Another way to help is to pick up any garbage you may find in the cemetery and take it home and dispose of it. Please do not remove any stones, though, no matter how broken they may appear! By garbage I just mean the stray candy wrapper, pop can, plastic bag and the like.
Once I get a plan organized, I hope to have a couple of work dates in order to fix several of the stones that still need attention. If you or someone you know has a tripod hoist or a gantry hoist, we need your help to get a couple of the larger stones back up on their pedestals! We will also have several gatherings a year to help clear the leaves and fallen sticks.
